How We Work

It starts short and continues only while it is useful.

Every engagement has the same shape, whichever way you work with us. A short, defined start in which we talk to your customers and set a strategy. Then design, build and ship, for as long as it helps, ending in one of three places you can see from the first day.

The shape

One line, one loop, three endings.

  1. Two to four weeks: The Runway.

We interview your customers and bring your stakeholders into one facilitated workshop. Each conversation is a point on the line.

  2. What The Runway leaves you.

A product strategy, a plan, and several concepts that show both. Whether to continue is a decision you make with those in hand.

  3. Twelve weeks or more: The Loop.

The line closes. We design, build and ship with your team, take what shipped back to customers, and go round again. The Loop runs a minimum of twelve weeks.

  4. Three ways it ends.

A delivered product. A design team, built and in place. Or an ongoing agreement in which we advise and direct the product that ships. You know all three before you start.

The Runway

Two to four weeks, then a decision.

We interview your customers. We bring your stakeholders into one facilitated workshop, so the people who own the decision hear the same evidence at the same time. Then we align what we heard with your business strategy.

You receive a strategy and a plan, with several concepts that show both. The concepts are there so the strategy can be judged as product, not as a document. Whether to continue is a decision you make with all of it in hand.

The Loop

Twelve weeks or more, ending one of three ways.

In The Loop we design, build and ship with your team, then take what shipped back to your customers and go again. It runs for a minimum of twelve weeks. It ends one of three ways.

A delivered product: validated with customers, in your codebase, ready to ship. A design team, built and in place, so the work continues without us. Or an ongoing agreement in which we advise and direct the product that ships.

Where the work lands

In your repo, or as reviewed pull requests from ours.

The code can go straight into your repo. Where your engineers own the codebase and review everything that enters it, we work in our own repo and deliver reviewed pull requests they merge on their terms.

For larger companies we also deliver the design system as code, with years of design judgment and proven heuristics built into it, so anyone on your team can generate flows and components that stay inside it. We call this a design system kitchen. It is how the work keeps paying off after we step out. More on Agency.

Three ways to work

The same shape, staffed three ways.

Fractional. A senior product design leader on your team, part time. For a company with no design function, or a design team without a strategic lead.

Projects. One product problem, taken from customer conversations to a validated, shipped product, working alongside your team.

Agency. A full-service partnership: we deliver the work now while we hire and build your design team and shape how design, product and engineering work together.
